The Auvergne landscape is varied and beautiful, much of it with national park status. The Combrailles region consists of undulating hills covered in forest, cut through with spectacular rivers and gorges. The altitude rises towards the volcanic peaks – the last volcano erupted some 7000 years ago.To the south of Clermont Ferrand are the evergreen forests and wild crags of the Livraidois and sunny plains leading to the south of France.

This landscape lends itself to many outdoor activities – skiing and snowboarding, walking and rock climbing, mountain biking, rafting and canoeing, fishing to name a few

The region is steeped in history, dotted with ancient castles and farms. There are plenty of fascinating towns and villages to visit, each with it's own character, many with authentic local markets.

The buzzy city of Clermont Ferrand is in the centre of the region and is an urban contrast to the lush countryside surrounding it.

If all this sounds a little exhausting, there are several therapeutic spa towns where you can relax and experience the healing mineral waters. There is even a Buddhist retreat with visitors centre just 8km from Gite La Jonchere.
